What is Offline DRM?
Offline DRM lets viewers download protected videos for offline playback while keeping the content encrypted and locked to the authorized app. It solves the tension between convenient downloads and content security.
How It Works
When a viewer downloads for offline use, the app stores the encrypted video along with a persistent DRM license that has an expiry and rules. Playback happens inside the app through the device's Content Decryption Module, so the downloaded file on disk is unreadable to file managers, other apps, or anyone who copies it off the device. When the license expires, playback stops.
Why Naive Downloads Fail
- Plain downloads expose files: A downloaded MP4 can be copied and shared freely.
