On Windows it offers a hardware-backed tier where Widevine would be software-only. It shares CENC packaging with Widevine, so adding it later need not mean re-encrypting a library.

How PlayReady Fits In

PlayReady shares CENC common encryption with Widevine, so a single encrypted copy can serve both. On Windows it offers a hardware-backed tier (SL3000) in situations where Widevine in the same browser would fall back to software-only protection, making it valuable for premium playback on PCs and TVs.

When You Need It

  • Smart-TV apps: Native TV platforms frequently expect PlayReady rather than Widevine.
  • Windows premium tiers: Where hardware-backed protection on Windows is required for HD or 4K.
  • Not usually day one: For web-and-mobile platforms, Widevine plus FairPlay usually suffices.

For Platform Owners

Because PlayReady uses the same CENC packaging as Widevine, adding it when smart-TV apps enter your roadmap does not require re-encrypting your existing library, only additional license-server signaling.
