Multi-DRM

Multi-DRM is the practice of protecting one video library with several DRM systems at once, Widevine, FairPlay, and sometimes PlayReady, so every browser, OS, and device can play it. No single DRM covers all platforms: Widevine skips Apple, FairPlay is Apple-only, so multi-DRM is required for universal protected playback.

What is Multi-DRM?

Multi-DRM is the practice of protecting a single video library with several DRM systems at once, most often Google Widevine and Apple FairPlay, and sometimes Microsoft PlayReady, so that every browser, operating system, and device can play the content securely.

Why One DRM Is Never Enough

Each DRM only works on certain platforms. Widevine runs on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Android, but not on Safari or iOS. FairPlay is the only DRM Apple devices accept. PlayReady covers Windows and many smart TVs. A platform that deploys only Widevine will see protected playback simply fail for every iPhone and iPad user.

How Multi-DRM Works

Encrypt once: CENC common encryption lets one encrypted copy serve multiple DRMs.
Package per device: The stream is delivered as DASH with Widevine or PlayReady, or HLS with FairPlay, based on the device.
License per CDM: Each device's Content Decryption Module gets the key from its matching license server.

For Platform Owners

Running Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady license servers and packaging in-house is complex, especially FairPlay's Apple certificate requirements. Most course, membership, and OTT businesses use a hosted multi-DRM provider that bundles all of it behind one API, so protected video just works across Chrome, Safari, Android, iOS, and smart TVs.
