Camcording (Camera Capture)

Camcording is filming a playing screen with a separate camera or phone to capture video that on-device protections cannot block. Because the capture happens outside the device entirely, no DRM, HDCP, or screen-capture flag can prevent it; only visible watermarking deters it and makes the resulting copy traceable.

What is Camcording?

Camcording, sometimes called the analog hole, is filming a playing screen with a separate camera or phone. It captures the video output without ever touching the protected device, which is why it defeats on-device protections.

Why Nothing Technical Blocks It

DRM protects decryption, HDCP protects the cable, and screen-capture flags protect the OS display path, but all of these live inside the playback device. A camera pointed at the screen operates entirely outside that boundary, so no software or hardware protection can stop it. This is the ultimate limit of content protection.

How It Is Countered

  • Visible dynamic watermarking: A moving overlay of the viewer's identity appears in the filmed copy, deterring the act and identifying the source.
  • Forensic watermarking: Robust marks can survive re-recording, supporting attribution.
  • Deterrence economics: Camcorded copies are low quality, reducing their resale value.
