Data stored in the viewer's browser
This page lists everything the VdoCipher web player stores in the viewer's browser, so that you can include it in your website's cookie declaration or privacy policy.
The player sets one cookie, which can be disabled, and, depending on how the embed is configured, a few localStorage entries. The player uses no advertising or tracking cookies and loads no third-party analytics scripts.
In summary:
- Two functional entries are short-lived and only appear under specific conditions. One is written and deleted immediately. The other lasts at most one hour and only after a DRM playback error.
- One diagnostics cookie,
vdo_id, can be fully disabled from the embed code. - Five entries depend on your player configuration. Auto-resume, which stores the last watched position, is enabled by default and can be turned off. The four preference entries for volume, speed, quality and caption language are saved only if you enable those options.
Complete list
| Entry | Details |
|---|---|
vdo_idcookie Indefinite | Purpose: Random anonymous identifier attached to playback error reports, so that playback failures on the same browser can be traced and debugged. Not used to count viewers. When it appears: Every playback, unless disabled with the noCookie option (see below) |
vdo-testlocalStorage Written and deleted immediately | Purpose: Checks whether localStorage is available When it appears: Every playback |
vdo/{videoId}/lastViewedTimevdo/{videoId}/lastViewUpdatedlocalStorage Indefinite | Purpose: Resume playback from where the viewer left off When it appears: Only if auto-resume is enabled in your player configuration |

@vdocipher/TBL1localStorage 1 hour | Purpose: Depending on your security configuration, a timestamp that makes the player fall back to software DRM after a hardware DRM failure When it appears: Only after a DRM playback error |
The player does not use sessionStorage. VdoCipher's backend services (metadata, license and analytics) set no cookies.
Categories for your cookie declaration
vdo_idis a functional or diagnostics cookie.- All localStorage entries are functional or preference storage.
Disabling the vdo_id cookie
Add noCookie=true to the iframe src to stop the player from setting the cookie:
<iframe
src="https://player.vdocipher.com/v2/?otp=[[REPLACE_WITH_OTP]]&playbackInfo=[[REPLACE_WITH_PLAYBACKINFO]]&noCookie=true"
style="border:0;width:720px;height:405px"
allow="encrypted-media"
allowfullscreen
></iframe>
For the web component, use the nocookie attribute:
<vdocipher-player
otp="[[REPLACE_WITH_OTP]]"
playbackInfo="[[REPLACE_WITH_PLAYBACKINFO]]"
nocookie="true"
></vdocipher-player>
When the cookie is disabled, or when the viewer's browser has cookies disabled, error reports are sent without a browser identifier.
Player settings that use localStorage
These settings are in the custom player configuration in the VdoCipher dashboard.
| Dashboard setting | Default | Stores |
|---|---|---|
| Enable Local Resume | On | vdo/{videoId}/lastViewedTimevdo/{videoId}/lastViewUpdated |
| Remember last volume level | Off | vdo/{websiteHostName}/volume |
| Remember last player speed | Off | vdo/{websiteHostName}/rate |
| Remember last quality | Off | vdo/{websiteHostName}/qualityTrackId |
| Remember last caption language | Off | vdo/{websiteHostName}/selectedCaptionId |
If you want to honour the viewer's cookie consent for these preferences, create two players in the VdoCipher dashboard: one with these settings enabled and one with them disabled. Then embed the player that matches the viewer's choice.
Data sharing
- The localStorage entries are read only by the player on the viewer's device. They are never sent to any server.
- The
vdo_idcookie value is sent only to servers operated by VdoCipher, as part of playback error reports. - None of this information is shared with any external vendor, analytics provider or advertising network.
With the iframe embed, the cookie and localStorage entries are stored under the player.vdocipher.com origin. With the web component rendering directly in your page, they are stored under your website's origin.
